Why shops get shut down

Most takedowns start with a few words.

Etsy acts on what a listing says. A brand name in a tag, a health claim in a description or a review swap can be enough to deactivate a listing or suspend a whole shop.

When a shop is suspended, sales stop until Etsy reviews the appeal. Most sellers only read the rules after that happens. Vetsy reads them with you, before you publish.

  1. 01

    Trademarks and IP

Brand names, characters and phrases like “inspired by” in a title, tag or description.

    ExampleSoy candle, Harry Potter inspired

  2. 02

    Prohibited items

Things Etsy bans outright or restricts by category, such as animal parts, weapons and hazardous materials.

    ExampleReal ivory pendant, vintage

  3. 03

    Misleading claims

Health, safety and origin claims you cannot back up, like “cures” or “handmade” on resold goods.

    ExampleLavender balm that cures insomnia

  4. 04

    Review manipulation

Swapping reviews, rewarding five stars, or pressing a buyer to change a rating they already left.

Example5 stars = 20% off your next order

How it works

From worry to a clean listing in three steps

No setup, no policy reading marathon. Start with one listing and see exactly what Etsy might object to.

  1. 1

    Scan a listing

Paste an Etsy listing link or type in a draft before you publish. On a paid plan, connect your shop to import listings in bulk.

  2. 2

    Fix what is flagged

Every issue comes with the reason it is risky and a suggested rewrite. Make the change, rescan, and watch the score move.

  3. 3

    Stay covered

Vetsy watches your reviews and Etsy's policy pages. If something is still taken down, it helps you write a calm, factual appeal.

What Vetsy does

Everything a careful seller would check, done with you

Five tools that share one goal: keep your listings live and your shop in good standing.

Compliance scanner

A scan that explains itself

Vetsy reads your title, description, tags, price and category against a library of Etsy policy rules, then scores the listing from 0 to 100.

  • Checks for trademarks, prohibited items, misleading claims and listing basics
  • AI scanning reads context that keyword rules miss, on Basic and above
  • Each issue says why it is risky and suggests a rewrite you can paste

Curious what the rules are based on? Browse the Etsy policy library.

CriticalTags

Character name used as a tag

Tags count as listing text. Etsy treats a protected character name in a tag like one in the title.

Replace the tag with what the item is: “wizard bookmark”.
WarningDescription

Safety claim without proof

“Non-toxic” and “baby safe” suggest testing you may not be able to show.

Name the materials instead: “made with water-based paint”.
Appeal letters

The appeal you would write on a calm day

Answer a short questionnaire about what happened and what you have already fixed. Vetsy drafts a structured letter to Etsy's Trust & Safety team that you can edit before sending.

  • Works for deactivated listings, suspended shops and payment holds
  • Comes with the points to stress, what not to say and how to submit
  • $9.99 for a single letter, or included with Basic, Pro and Shield
About the appeal letter generator
Appeal letterDraft

Dear Etsy Trust & Safety team,

On March 4 my listing “Enchanted library candle” was deactivated under the intellectual property policy. I understand the title used a protected name.

I have removed that name from the title, tags and description of all 14 affected listings, and I now check every new listing before it is published.

I would be grateful if you could review my shop for reinstatement. Thank you for your time.

Emphasize

  • The exact policy Etsy cited
  • Fixes already made, with listing counts
  • Your new pre-publish check

Avoid

  • Blaming Etsy or other sellers
  • Vague promises with no detail
  • Threats or legal language

Vetsy helps Etsy sellers avoid listing removals and shop suspensions, and respond calmly when they happen. It checks your listings against Etsy's policies, monitors your reviews, tracks changes to Etsy's policy pages, and drafts appeal letters when Etsy takes action on your shop.

Paste an Etsy listing URL or enter the title, description, tags and price by hand. Vetsy checks them against its library of Etsy policy rules and returns a compliance score, a list of issues ranked by severity, the policy each one relates to, and a suggested fix. On paid plans, an AI review also reads the listing as a whole to catch what keyword rules can miss.

The rule library covers the issues that most often lead to removals: brand names and characters used without permission, prohibited and restricted items, health and medical claims, misleading wording such as false scarcity, tag problems, and pricing red flags. Rules are reviewed when Etsy updates its policies.

You answer a short set of questions: what happened (shop suspension, listing removal or payment hold), what Etsy told you, and what you have already fixed. Vetsy then drafts a clear, professional letter, with the points to stress, phrases to avoid and how to submit it. Paid plans include monthly appeal letters, and anyone with a free account can buy a single letter for $9.99.

No one can. Etsy makes every decision. A good letter helps by showing that you understand the problem and have already fixed it, which is what a reviewer needs to see. Vetsy helps you write that letter; you review it and send it yourself.

No. The connection is read-only. Vetsy imports listing and review data so it can scan and monitor them. It never edits listings, prices, policies or shop settings. Every fix is yours to make in Etsy.

On Pro and Shield, Vetsy checks your connected shop for new reviews every 6 hours (Pro) or every hour (Shield). Low ratings and risky wording are flagged on your dashboard, and you get a suggested reply you can edit and post yourself on Etsy. Vetsy never posts on your behalf.

Vetsy checks Etsy's legal pages and key Help Center articles every week. When something changes, the update is reviewed and the rule library is adjusted. On Pro and Shield, your imported listings are rescanned against the new rules and you get an alert if any are affected.

Your data is stored in an encrypted database and sent over encrypted connections. Etsy access tokens are encrypted separately and never reach your browser. We do not sell your data. Listing text is shared only with the providers that run Vetsy, such as our AI provider for AI scans and appeal letters. You can export or delete your data from your settings.
